A review of reports received March 25 through March 31 from
the Niagara Frontier Region.

The PEREGRINE FALCON monitor is in place in the US Airways
Office in the Statler Building in downtown Buffalo. There
are now four eggs in the peregrine nest. March 26, one
MERLIN was still present at the University at Buffalo Main
Street campus and the MERLIN in the Town of Tonawanda was
reported again March 29 along Center Avenue and the
abandoned railroad tracks.

Owls this week; 9 SHORT-EARED OWLS were found just north of
the Iroquois Refuge in the Town of Shelby, along East
Shelby, Fletcher Chapel and Posson Roads. 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS
remain at Airport and Newell Roads in Dunkirk and a single
SHORT-EARED OWL was found on Ott Road in Fort Erie, Ontario.
4 LONG-EARED OWLS also on Ott Road at the Stevensville
Conservation Area. Another LONG-EARED OWL at Wilson-
Tuscaurora Park in Wilson. GREAT HORNED OWLS in Porter and
near Waterport in Orleans County. And EASTERN SCREECH-OWL at
Fort Niagara Park along with RED-HEADED WDPKR. and RED-
BELLIED WDPKR.

From the Allegany Reservoir this week; BALD EAGLE on nest
2.6 miles south of exit 17 on Route 17. Three pairs of
OSPREY on nests at Willow Bay, Bone Run and exit 18 on Route
280. March 26, 12 TURKEY VULTURES were roosted in a yard
along the Lake Erie shore in Lakeview. The birds were
spreading their wings in the morning sun, apparently warming
up to continue migration. March 29, at the Hamburg
hawkwatch, 642 raptors included 560 TURKEY VULTURES and on
the 28th at the hawkwatch, a flock of 24 AMERICAN PIPITS.
March 26, an impressive count of 86 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were
found once again in Dayton in Cattaraugus County.

March 27, on Lake Ontario off Barker and Shadigee, RED-BR.
MERGANSERS and OLDSQUAWS were the majority of waterfowl,
plus RED-THROATED LOON, 14 HORNED GREBES, 25 NORTHERN
PINTAILS and 1 SURF SCOTER. In the Lake Ontario Plains of
Niagara and Orleans counties, 2 SNOW GEESE, 2 TUNDRA SWANS,
WOOD DUCK, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2
LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 2 SNOW BUNTINGS and numbers of TREE
SWALLOWS and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. At the Tonawanda Wildlife
Management Area, 140 TUNDRA SWANS continue at the Route 77
overlook.

A late report from Boston, March 22, the first report of
COMMON SNIPE this season. Other reports this week; 2 BL.-CR.
NIGHT-HERONS over Whirlpool State Park in Niagara Falls. 4
GLAUCOUS GULLS off the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo. 5 to 10
LITTLE GULLS in a large flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the
lower Niagara River off Queenston. NORTHERN SHRIKE on
Telegraph Road in the Town of Pike in southern Wyoming
County. RUBY-CR. KINGLET on Parkside Avenue in Buffalo. And
a reported SNOWY OWL, along Route 400 between the Transit
and Jamison exits. More details would be appreciated as
there have been no SNOWY OWLS reported in the region this
past winter.
