Highlights of reports received March 4 through March 11 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include Bewick's race of TUNDRA
SWAN, AMERICAN PIPIT, BALD EAGLE, waterfowl and NORTHERN
SHRIKE.

March 5, in Chautauqua County, a BEWICK'S SWAN was reported
in a flock of 300 TUNDRA SWANS at the Van Buren Road ponds
in Pomfret. Bewick's is the Eurasian race of the North
American TUNDRA SWAN. It is difficult to know whether this
is a feral bird escaped from captivity or a vagrant from a
far away continent. Also at the ponds, 51 NORTHERN PINTAILS
and 3 GREEN-WINGED TEALS. Other reports from Chautauqua
County this week included 12 early arriving AMERICAN PIPITS
on Wilbur Road in Pomfret on March 5, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK at
the Jamestown Nature Sanctuary in Kiantone, SURF SCOTER on
Van Buren Bay and a KILLDEER on Van Buren Road, up to 5
SHORT-EARED OWLS at Newell and Airport Roads in Dunkirk and
2 PURPLE FINCHES in Westfield.

At the Iroquois Refuge, an active BALD EAGLE nest is once
again being monitored at the Visitors Center on Casey Road
with a remote video system. Last year, a wind storm
destroyed one nest and camera, but the eagles have returned
to utilize a second monitored nest, also behind the Center,
where one egg has already been laid. Check at the Center for
viewing times. Also this week, two adult eagles on the
Niagara River at Lewiston and a single adult in the Town of
Concord. Other reports from the Iroquois Refuge and
Tonawanda Area; many CANADA GEESE, 43 TUNDRA SWANS, WOOD
DUCK, AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARD,
NORTHERN PINTAIL, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED
MERGANSER, AMERICAN COOT and 40 SNOW BUNTINGS.

NORTHERN SHRIKES are nearing the end of their winter visits
to the region. Shrikes were reported this week on Berry Road
in Pomfret, Hopper Road in Hanover, at the Dunkirk Airport,
Pleasentview Drive in Lancaster and at Lakeside Cemetery in
Hamburg. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK reports included 5 in the
Tonawanda Management Area and up to 32 in Dayton in
Cattaraugus County. Also in Dayton, TURKEY VULTURE, NORTHERN
HARRIER, 10 RED-TAILED HAWKS, AMERICAN KESTREL, 55 HORNED
LARKS and 20 SNOW BUNTINGS. COOPER'S HAWKS visited yards in
Kenmore and Buffalo. The pair of MERLINS at the University
at Buffalo Main Street campus were still present the evening
of March 5 at the Hayes buildings and Clark Hall. March 8,
the MERLIN in the Town of Tonawanda was reported again,
along Center Avenue parallel to the abandoned railroad
tracks.

Other reports this week; EASTERN SCREECH-OWL at Fort Niagara
State Park. A pair of RED-BELLIED WDPKRS. at a feeder in
Clarence Center. A mixed flock of 50 AMERICAN ROBINS and
CEDAR WAXWINGS in East Amherst and 20 robins in Cheektowaga.
An AMER. TREE SPARROW continues at a feeder in Buffalo. In
Porter, 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and 6 WHITE-THR. SPARROWS and
RED-W. BLACKBIRDS were reported at several locations
including a flock of 70 near Cazenovia Park in South
Buffalo.

Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, March 18.
Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
