This is the Sunday, April 4th , 1999, update of Waco area birding
reports sponsored by the Central Texas Audubon Society.
On Friday, April 2, a LEAST TERN was observed at Airport Park on Lake
Waco along with a migrating flock of FRANKLIN’S GULLS. Least Terns
are very rare migrants through Central Texas. Also on Lake Waco this
weekend were at least three OSPREY and a large flock of LITTLE BLUE
HERONS.
A flock of 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were first found on Friday, April 2 in
the last field before the entrance to the Waco Metropolitan Area
Regional Sewerage System ponds located along the Brazos River off FM434
1/2 mile east of Loop 340. This is the most regular spot during spring
migration to find Uplands in McLennan County. On Saturday there were 21
Uplands in the same field and today there were at least 100. Also at
the treatment ponds on Saturday, April 3: 7 CINNAMON TEAL, 1 WILSON’S
PHALAROPE, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS AND 2 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. This is an
early report for the semipalmateds.
An early record for COMMON NIGHTHAWK calling over far south Waco at
5:15 am on Friday, April 2. The same area had CHIMNEY SWIFTS later that
morning, and more Swifts were over the Waco suburb of Hewitt on
Saturday as were more Little Blue Herons.
There have been several reports of at least 6 to 10 GOLDEN-CHEEKED
WARBLERS being observed and heard on the Shinnery Ridge Trail on the
southwest side of Meridian State Park in Bosque County about 50 miles
northwest of Waco. BLUE-GREY GNATCATCHERS were observed in large
migrating flocks from Riesel in southeast McLennan County to Hewitt on
Friday, and GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS can be seen and heard along Fair
Park Road in Reiesel as well.
If you have information to add to this report, please leave a message
after the tone. Thanks for calling.
