This is the Heart-of-Texas Rare Bird Alert sponsored by the Rio Brazos
Audubon Society updated as of Sunday, April 4.

The Heart-of-Texas RBA covers ten counties surrounding College Station
(Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Lee, Leon, Madison, Milam, Robertson,
Waller, Washington).

The migrant push has increased and a greater variety of warblers were
sighted this week. Ellen Ratoosh reports the Carolina Chickadee
nest in her yard had three downy chicks on April 3.

GREEN HERONS have arrived with two reports by David Shackelford on
Mar 25 and 31 at Hensel Park, College Station.

BROAD-WINGED HAWKS have been migrating through the Brazos Valley.
Darrell Vollert watched 50 over Nicholson Road in Chappell Hill on
the 1st and Ellen Ratoosh viewed five flocks (6, 15, 30, 48, 600) on
the 3rd over Emerald Forest, College Station. Keith Arnold noticed
a CRESTED CARACARA just east of Milan Co. Rd. 380/390 on Apr 1.

Two rare CASPIAN TERNS flew over Emerald Forest, College Station,
on the 31st and were spotted by Ellen Ratoosh.

Joan Dziezyc heard a WHIP-POOR-WILL in her yard between Wellborn
and the Brazos River on the evenings of Mar 29 and 30.

BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD and RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continue at the
Effinger’s in Chappell Hill and Cole’s in Brenham, respectively,

A flock of eight TREE SWALLOWS fly over Ellen Ratoosh’s yard in
Emerald Forest on the 2nd. The swallow population has increased at
the Tabor Road overpass on Hwy 6 in Bryan. Fred Collins counted a
pair of Cliff Swallows and a dozen each of CAVE SWALLOWS and Barn
Swallows on the 26th.

WORM-EATING, SWAINSON’S and KENTUCKY WARBLERS were heard by
Darrell Vollert at Lick Creek Park, College Station on the 3rd.
The latter two species nest in the park. This is the earliest arrival of
Swainson’s Warbler in Central Brazos Valley, the previous early date
being 4/11/65. David Shackelford heard a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH
singing in Hensel Park on the 31st.

DICKCISSELS were found at two different locations near Chappell
Hill on Mar 28 and Apr 1 by Darrell Vollert.

A couple of PINE SISKINS accompanied about a hundred American
Goldfinches migrating through Emerald Forest. This is only the
second report of siskins this year.
