Greetings this is the Rio Grande Valley Audubon Alert for Wednesday
morning March 31, 1999 sponsored by the Frontera Audubon Society of
South Texas and the Valley Chamber of Commerce.

We have number of reports from the Sabal Palm Grove. We have a TROPICAL
PARULA (Parula pitiayumi) at the grove. No specifics so check with the
sanctuary staff. Also we have reports of LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH (Seiurus
motacilla), WORM-EATING WARBLER (Helmitheros vermivorus), PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER (Protonotaria citrea) NASHVILLE WARBLER (Vermivora ruficapilla),
just to name a few. Also at the Sabal Palm Grove GROOVE-BILLED ANIS
(Crotophaga sulcirostris) are present along the Resaca Loop Trail; and
also Swallow-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) continue to be seen
over the sanctuary itself.

Llano Grande south of Weslaco seems to be playing host to a pair of
BLACK PHOEBES (Sayornis nigricans) that might me nesting; Which would be
a first record of Black Phoebes nesting in the Valley. so be careful in
that area if your going to be looking for the birds.

In regard to TROPICAL PARULAS we have reports of Tropical Parula near
Eagle Pond in Bentsen State Park and also at Anzulduas County Park near
the main boat ramp.

Up river we have HOOK-BILLED KITES (Chondrohierax uncinatus) in Chapeno.
Also have HOOK-BILLED KITES being seen at Bensten State Park, usually
early in the morning between 9 am and 10:30 over the east bathrooms.

At Salineno look for RED-BILLED PIGEONS (Columba flavirostris) up river
on the island.

Back at Bentsen look for BLUE BUNTING* (Cyanocompsa parellina) at
trailer site 18.

Back a Llano Grande at Weslaco look for a large flock of FULVOUS
WHISTLING-DUCK (Dendrocygna bicolor).

At Santa Ana NWR KING RAIL (Rallus elegans) is present on Pintail Lake.
Also look for GROOVE-BILLED ANIS in that same area.

BROWN JAYS (Cyanocorax morio) are present at Chapeno in the El Rio RV
Park and WHITE-COLLARED SEEDEATERS (Sporophila torqueola) in Zapata at
the pond nest to the library; and also in San Ygancio at the end of
Washington Street down along the river.

We thank you for calling the Audubon Alert if you have any questions or
would like to leave a message please feel free to do so at the sound of
the tone also ask you leave your name and phone number in case we have
to get back with you and good birding.
