Welcome to the Bird Alert of Kansas City, a service of Burroughs Audubon
updated Tuesday, March 30th.
On March 30th Lloyd Moore birded the Marais De Cygne Wildlife Area
of northeastern Linn County, KS and found the following:
75 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 125 SNOW GEESE, 2 ROSS'S GEESE,
13 species of ducks, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 35 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
15 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 100 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 12 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS,
150 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 15 COMMON SNIPE,
1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 6 EASTERN PHOEBES, 5 TREE SWALLOWS,
6 FIELD SPARROWS, 2 LARK SPARROWS, and 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.
Kathy Lewis and Shirley Hartman birded Four Rivers Conservation Area
(Vernon County, MO) on March 30th and report 2 CINNAMON TEAL, seen about
200 yards from the end of the one-way loop drive. Good numbers of ducks
of several species were seen, as well as 200 - 300 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS.
Also present were GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS,
numerous COMMON SNIPE, EASTERN PHOEBES, VESPER and
SAVANNAH SPARROWS.
On Saturday, March 27th, Pete Morose visited Lewis and Clark State Park
(Buchanan County, MO) and reports numerous ducks and SNOW GEESE.
2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were on the fish-rearing pond. At Little Bean
Marsh (Platte County, MO), 150 - 200 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen
as well TREE SWALLOW, FOX SPARROW and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
The next day, March 28th at Lake Jacomo (Jackson County, MO), Pete reported
2 COMMON LOONS at the south boat dock area.
Ed and Heide McCullough birded Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge and
Bob Brown Conservation Area (Holt County, MO) on March 29th and report
75 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, 40 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS,
120-plus GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at Bob Brown, 3,000 SNOW GEESE,
5 ROSS'S GEESE, 65 WOOD DUCK at Bob Brown, 3 GREATER SCAUP,
25 COMMON MERGANSERS, 4 BALD EAGLES, LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
and BAIRD'S and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, all at Bob Brown. Numerous
COMMON SNIPE were seen at both locations. 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were
seen at the northeast corner of Bob Brown. EASTERN PHOEBES, TREE SWALLOWS,
a WESTERN MEADOWLARK at Bob Brown, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen.
Galen Pittman, Mick McHugh and Mark Corder birded Jefferson, Douglas, Miami
and Linn Counties, KS on March 27th and report the following highlights:
3 alternate-plumage COMMON LOONS at Perry Lake, WESTERN and
HORNED GREBES at LaCygne Lake, GREATER SCAUP at Paola Sewage Ponds,
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and several BALD EAGLES at Perry Lake,
1 FRANKLIN'S GULL near the Lawrence Airport, numerous BONAPARTE'S GULLS
at LaCygne Lake, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and EASTERN TOWHEE near
Hillsdale Lake, and TREE SWALLOWS at Marais De Cygne. 20 species of
waterfowl, 8 species of shorebirds, and 11 species of sparrows were seen
during the day.
On Saturday, March 27th, several groups, including a Burroughs Audubon field
trip led by Don Arney, birded the Taberville Prairie, Schell-Osage
Conservation
Area, and Four Rivers Conservation Area in St. Clair, Vernon and Bates
Counties, MO. The following is a composite of their report:
GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS booming at 3 locations at Taberville, 1 MERLIN,
1 LECONTE'S SPARROW. At Schell-Osage, 1 CINNAMON TEAL was seen south
of the road at the north end of Pool A. AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, COMMON SNIPE, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS,
2 COMMON LOONS, 1 EARED GREBE, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, EASTERN TOWHEE,
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
3 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, and 2 PINE WARBLERS which were seen in the
pines behind the headquarters. At Four Rivers, 89 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS,
200 COMMON SNIPE, 120 AMERICAN PIPITS and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were
seen.
