This is the Sunday, March 28th, update of Abilene area
Birding news, sponsored by the Big Country Audubon Society.
A female EASTERN TOWHEE (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) was
reported from near Baird in Callahan Co on the 25th. The
bird has not been relocated.
On Saturday the 27th, a RUDDY TURNSTONE (Arenaria interpres)
was seen at Fort Phantom Lake in Jones Co. The bird was
seen at the northeast area of the lake just east of the dam.
Also seen in the same area: a flock of 6 CHESTNUT-COLLARED
LONGSPUR (Calcarius ornatus); 1 Snowy Plover (Charadrius
alexandrinus); 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (Calidris bairdii) and a
FRANKLIN'S GULL (Larus pipixcan). Species seen in the SeaBee
Park area of the lake include: GREATER YELLOWLEGS (Tringa
melanoleuca) and LESSER YELLOWLEGS (Tringa flavipes);
HERRING GULL (Larus argentatus); AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN
(Pelecanus erythrorhynchos); COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (Geothlypis
trichas) and WESTERN SANDPIPER (Calidris mauri). A SOLITARY
SANDPIPER (Tringa solitaria) was seen on a pond about one
mile south of the park on FM 600.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE (Zenaida asiatica) was reported from the
McMurry University campus in south Abilene on the 25th and
several ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (Vermivora celata) were
reported from the area as well.
HORNED LARK (Eremophila alpestris) were reported from Lake
Clyde in Callahan Co on the 23rd.
