On the 26th in the northwest on the Minnesota border, Dickinson County, Iowa
and Jackson County, Minnesota, a report on the Minnesota chatline indicated
that a BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen at the north end of Big Spirit Lake, and a
GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE was at Grover's Lake. In Sioux County, a RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH was on the Dordt College campus at Sioux center.
In the southeast in Johnson County, 2 SMITH'S LONGSPURS were found with a
flock of LAPLAND LONGSPURS at the same location six were observed on the
24th. This site is two miles north of Lone Tree and 3/4 mile west in a
plowed field on the north side of the road.
On the 25th in the northeast in Black Hawk County, RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS may
be setting up housekeeping as in past years at the Hartman Reserve at Cedar
Falls, as one was seen there along Hackett Road. In Bremer County, four
SHORT-EARED OWLS and two SANDHILL CRANES were spotted at the Aldo Leopold
WA, which is along county road C-50 a half mile west of Wapsie Valley HS. In
the southeast in Johnson County, a ROSS'S GOOSE was at the S & G Quarry
south of Iowa City, and a CHUKAR has been visiting Julie Englander's
backyard in Iowa City this week. To look for this bird, call Julie at (319)
