In southeastern South Dakota, Dave Swanson and Eric Liknes saw three male
GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES on March 20. They made this sighting in a plowed
field northwest of the intersection of Greenfield Road and Highway 50, about
3
miles east of Vermillion (Clay County). Jill Haukos of Lubbock, Texas
visited Sioux
Falls in mid-March and observed two BALD EAGLES within the city limits of
Sioux
Falls (Minnehaha County).

Several observers reported hundreds of thousands of SNOW GEESE and large
groups of BALD EAGLES in northeastern South Dakota. On March 15, Bill
Schultze
of Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge (Brown County) reported 92 BALD EAGLES

within one-half mile of Claremont corner (north of Bath and east of Sand
Lake).
Dan Tallman visited the area the following day and counted 113 BALD EAGLES.

Other species included GREATER SCAUP, HOODED MERGANSERS,
CANVASBACKS, and RING-NECKED DUCKS. Another observer reported 2 BALD
EAGLES near Fulton (Hanson). Archie Monroe reported a long GOLDEN EAGLE
just
west of his house, which is 1 mile south of the North Dakota line on Highway
281
(Brown County).

In central South Dakota, Patsy Kringel and Sarah Hibbitts saw their first
EASTERN
BLUEBIRD of the spring near Oahe Dam (Hughes County) on March 19. Other
central South Dakota reports include a March 19 KILLDEER sighting by Rick
Olson
at Hyde Waterfowl Production Area near Oahe Dam. Rick also recently
observed a
number of species in the Oahe Dam tailrace. In addition to a variety of
waterfowl
and other water birds was an adult winter plumage THAYER'S GULL observed on
March 24.

Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Brown County will hold their BALD
EAGLE
Day on Sunday, March 28.
