Greetings,
This is the Michigan Statewide Weekly Bird Summary for Thursday, March
25, 1999. This report is sponsored by the BERRIEN BIRDING CLUB.
In WAYNE COUNTY -- 5 LONG-EARED OWLS were present on March 20 at Lake
Erie Metropark. They are easy to see FROM the nature trail that starts
across the parking lot from the Marshland Museum. This is the same
location as the past few weeks. A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was seen on March
24, at the south end of the Willow Run Airport.
In MONROE COUNTY -- Spring migrants reported from the Erie Marsh
Preserve on March 24 include 8 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
2 DUNLIN, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and TREE SWALLOWS. Most of the expected
waterfowl are still around as well, although it was reported that the
numbers were less this week than last.
In HILLSDALE COUNTY -- 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen on March 20 on Tripp
Rd just north of Burt Rd.
In JACKSON COUNTY -- Spring migrants reported this week include 100
CANVASBACK, 100 RING-NECKED DUCKS and 5 HOODED MERGANSERS at Thorn Lake.
Other birds reported include CHIPPING SPARROWS, TURKEY VULTURES,
NORTHERN PINTAIL & both BLUE-WINGED & GREEN-WINGED TEAL.
In BAY COUNTY -- 19 species of waterfowl were reported on March 21 from
the Nayanquing Pt SGA. , including 60 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 25 NORTHERN
PINTAILS & 100 CANVASBACKS.
In IOSCO COUNTY -- Tawas Point SP was active on March 21. EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKE, a SHORT-EARED OWL, a male OLDSQUAW, and
BONAPARTE’S GULL were all reported. It also sounds like the shorebird
habitat at Tawas should be great this year.
In ALLEGAN COUNTY -- On March 22 an adult LITTLE GULL was seen on the
Kalamazoo River upstream from Douglas off of 130th (Riverside) Dr.
8-14 Immature BALD EAGLES & 1 Adult were seen at this same location on
March 20 by two different groups of birders. One observer mentioned how
8 IMM. BALD EAGLES came in together like “a flock of shorebirds!” Also
on March 20, 2 BALD EAGLES (1 IMM, 1 ADULT) were seen at the Farm Unit
of the Allegan State Game Area, along 118th & 120th ave. Lots of
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were also seen.
In BERRIEN COUNTY -- On March 21 , 44 SNOW GEESE (34 WHITE & 10 BLUE)
were seen in the flooded field near the intersection of Linco &
Scottsdale Rd.
In ANTRIM COUNTY -- A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on March 23 near the
intersection of Western & Easily Rds.
In NEWAYGO COUNTY -- A TREE SWALLOW was seen near Croton on March 22.
In CHIPPEWA COUNTY -- COMMON REDPOLL & PINE GROSBEAK are still being
reported from Whitefish Point in good numbers, as well as BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS which are being seen daily this week. 7 species of rapters
have been seen so far this spring, with BALD EAGLES far outnumbering
everytihng else at this point. A SHARP-TAILED GROUSE was seen from the
hawk platform on March 21.
That seems to be it for now. The next scheduled update of this report
will occur on April 1. To report sightings leave a message after the
tone or call Pat Underwood at Love Creek Nature Center at (616)
471-2617.
Good birding!
