__HIGHLIGHTS ON THIS REPORT___________________________________
SANDHILL CRANES, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, ROSS'S GOOSE, and
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE
__THESE BIRDS HAVE BEEN REPORTED FROM MULTIPLE LOCATIONS______
FOX SPARROWS, BLUEBIRDS, ROBINS, TURKEY VULTURES, CEDAR
WAXWINGS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and the rest of the
expected ducks. SONG SPARROWS seemed to show up in force on
Tuesday.
__DUPAGE COUNTY_______________________________________________
I have a single report of a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE found at
Springbrook Prairie on Saturday and Sunday. The bird was seen
on the path west of the model airplane field, where it crosses
a small creek. Also seen in this area this weekend were
several WOODCOCK. Other reports from Springbrook for Sunday
include SNIPE, PIED-BILLED GREBE and GREEN-WINGED TEAL. A
SWAMP SPARROW and a GREATER SCAUP were among the birds found
on Tuesday.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was relocated at the Arboretum on
Monday. It was again in the area of the legumes sign and near
some trellises that are in that area. On Sunday, it was found
at parking 2 along with an EASTERN PHOEBE. On Wednesday, a
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was found near Parking 9.
A TURKEY VULTURE was seen on Wednesday at Waterfall Glen.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen at the southeast corner of Lyman Woods
on Saturday.
At Greene Valley, 5 to 6 WOODCOCKS were found on Thursday and
Saturday evenings. The NORTHERN SHRIKE was relocated, on
Saturday, near the top of the first rise as you enter the
preserve.
Vast quantities (specifically 3466) of SANDHILL CRANES were
seen migrating over eastern DuPage County on Saturday around
noon. There have been multiple reports of smaller movements
of cranes since Thursday.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen over the fields east of the main
body of water at Songbird Slough on Saturday.
__KANE COUNTY_________________________________________________
15 TREE SWALLOWS were seen at Blackhawk Forest Preserve on
Friday.
__FERMILAB____________________________________________________
A PHOEBE was at the entrance to the Garden Club on Thursday.
6 HORNED GREBES were seen on Lake Law on Wednesday.
2 GREATER SCAUP were found on the moat inside the ring on
Saturday and Sunday.
__ELSEWHERE___________________________________________________
17 species of ducks, along with a HORNED GREBE, were found at
Shabbona State Park on Wednesday.
__REPORTS WERE ALSO RECEIVED FROM THESE LOCATIONS_____________
Ducks were also reported from Rice Lake, Crabapple Lake at the
Arboretum, Lakeland subdivision, Songbird Slough, various
Fermilab lakes and McKee Marsh
__DIRECTIONS__________________________________________________
The map coordinates given after each location correspond to
the Chicago Tribune Chicagoland Map:
To get to Rice Lake, head east from the intersection of
Naperville Road and Route 56 in Wheaton. This is the location
of the Danada Shopping Center. You will see the lake on the
south side of Route 56. (P-7)
To get to the Lakeland subdivision, take Naperville-Plainfield
Road south from 127th St. Turn east at the first entrance
south of 127th St.
To get to Greene Valley Forest Preserve, take Route 53 to 75th
St. south of Lisle. Go west on 75th St. to Greene. Go south
on Greene to 79th St. Go west on 79th until you see the sign
for the Youth Camp and Trail-head on your right. Turn left.
Follow the road to the parking lot. (R-7)
The Morton Arboretum is located on Route 53 in Lisle, just
north of I 88. There is a charge for entry. (P-7)
Lyman Woods is located in Downers Grove on Highland Avenue,
south of 31st Street. (P-8)
To get to McKee Marsh in Warrenville, take I 88 to Route 59.
Go north on Route 59 to Mack Road in Warrenville. Turn east
and continue until you see the parking lot for McKee Marsh on
the north side of the street. Take the path north from the
parking lot to the marsh. (P-5)
Blackhawk Forest Preserve is located on Route 31 5.4 miles
north of Route 64 in St. Charles.
