Douglas County:
On March 11, Mark Robbins observed an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, an
adult and an immature GLAUCOUS GULL, and 3 FRANKLIN'S GULLS at the Lawrence
Riverfront Park Wildlife area (Douglas Co., 39 H9), just north of Lawrence,
on the Kaw River. The LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on March 14 by
Alexis Powell at the flooded sandpit in north Lawrence. On March 17, Roger
Boyd observed a CAROLINA WREN nest with 5 eggs in Baldwin (Douglas Co., 52
B4) Phil Wedge reported a PURPLE FINCH at his feeders on March 18 at Lone
Star Lake (Douglas Co., 52 A4) Art Swalwell reported Blue-winged Teal at
Perry lake on March 14. Matt Gearhardt and Aaron Mitchell observed 6
AMERICAN PIPITS at Perry on March 14.
Quivira, Stafford County:
Roger Boyd and one of his classes observed a SNOWY PLOVER and several
GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Quivira NWR on March 16.
Arkansas City, Cowley County:
Gene Young had a PURPLE FINCH at his residence in Ark City on March 14
(Cowley Co., 75 H8)
Cheney Reservoir, Reno County:
Pete Janzen and Chet Gresham observed the following at Cheney Reservoir
(Reno Co. portion)on March 14: 100 WHITE PELICANS, 12 ROSS' GEESE, 1 MERLIN,
1 FRANKLIN'S GULL, 1 2d winter GLAUCOUS GULL, and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE.
SHOREBIRDS:
Wedge reported 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS from Lone Star Lake (Douglas 62 A4) on
March 14. Dan Larson and others observed a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at the
Carnahan Cove on Tuttle Creek Reservoir (Pottawatomie Co., 37 C7) and 2
GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Oldsburg marsh on March 14. Also on March 14, Dave
Williams reported a few PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS from a
wetland along 231st St. between Waverly Road and Spoon Creek Rd. near
lawrence. Janzen reported 9 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS
at the Colwich Wetland #2 (Sedgwick 61 G9) on March 10.
PURPLE MARTINS:
Franklin Bidinger reported them in Clinton (Douglas 39 I8) on March 16. Max
Thompson reported one at Southwestern College (Cowley 75 F9) on March 18.
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS:
Started showing up in larger numbers. Young observed 300 flying north on
March 19 in Cowley Co., and 400-500 were observed on March 14 by Harry
Gregory in Wichita. Nancy Leo and Jo Seaman observed them at Marais des
Cygnes on March 10.
Rush and Pawnee Counties:
Scott Seltman reported an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK 3 miles west and 1 mile
north of Larned (Pawnee 59 A5) on March 14, along with SHORT-EARED OWLS in
Rush Co. Don Kazmeier reported a SWAMP SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and 50
PINE SISKINS at his feeders in Larned on March 13.
Hillsdale Lake, Miami County:
Mark Land observed 3 AMERICAN PIPITS at Hillsdale Lake on March 13.
Crawford County:
Robert Mangile reported 20 BLUE-WINGED TEAL in Crawford County on March 12.
Jim Ausemus reported a TURKEY VULTURE near Helper on March 11.
Lake Afton, Sedgwick County:
Pete and Chet also found 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Lake Afton (Sedgwick Co., 74
A4) on March 14.
Hoyt, Jackson County:
Bill Trelton (sp.?) reported 20 SMITH'S LONGSPURS with 350 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS, 3 miles west of Hoyt (Jackson Co., 38 D5) on March 11.
La Cygne Lake, Linn County:
Jo Seaman and Nancy Leo observed the following on March 10 from La Cygne
Lake: a WESTERN GREBE and 4 BONAPRTE'S GULLS.
Many reports of EASTERN PHOBES, FOX SPARROWS, and SAVANNAH SPARROWS have
come from around the state.
On an interesting note, the 4 SWANS at Quivira have been reported as TUNDRA
and TRUMPETER SWANS. However, no two reports are alike, so I'll just be
glad to report that there are 4 SWANS at Quivira, last reported on March 17.
