Hello, this is the Alabama Rare Bird Report for Sunday, March 21,
1999.

HIGHLIGHTS: Am. Golden-Plover, Short-eared Owl, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher,
and Red Crossbill.

At least 150 AM. GOLDEN-PLOVERS were discovered 3/20 at the Woerner
Turf Farm in Lowndes County. Take Co. 29 through Lowndesboro from
US 80. At 4.8 miles from US 80 turn right at the sign for the farm.
In 3.0 miles the paved road becomes dirt. In another 1.5 miles you reach
the farm entrance on the left at a 90-degree right turn. Please do
not walk or drive on the grass at this or any sod farm.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted just east of the airport
at Dauphin Island 3/9.

A SHORT-EARED OWL continued through 3/17 from the parking lot
midway along the northern boundary of Key Cave NWR west of Florence.
Go west from town on AL 20 towards Savannah and turn left on Co. 2
(Gunwaleford Rd.). In 4.0 miles turn left on Co. 223 (just past Bubba's
Grocery) and go 1.5 miles south to Co. 204. Turn right and go 0.6 miles.

RED CROSSBILLS are nesting in Talladega NF. Call Bill Summerour at
256/435-4730 for details.
