##### Hotline Transcript #####
=20
This is Jerry Bird standing in for Stacy Peterson with Issue # 32 of the =
Mississippi Coast bird hotline for Saturday, March 20, 1999. To skip the =
rest of=20
the hotline report and just leave your message for us, press the pound =
key (#)=20
at any time.
A quick announcement: PLEASE report your success or failure in finding =
any
birds mentioned on this tape. Your updates are valuable for others who =
may
wish to see any particular bird -- IF it's still around! Indeed, your =
updates
are the very essence from which this hotline gains strength!
***** coast migrant warbler update *****
Warblers are beginning to show up in numbers along the coast and more =
are on=20
their way. On Friday, Debbie and I spent much of the morning in =
Spence=92s Woods=20
in western Hancock County where we picked up a WORM-EATING WARBLER, 17 =
NORTHERN=20
PARULA=92S, 2 HOODED WARBLERS, and 9 WHITE-EYED VIREOS. Another place =
good for=20
warblers has been near the riparian strip at the northeast end of Hiller =
Park in=20
Biloxi. On Monday the 15th Stacy had several WHITE-EYED VIREOS, a male =
NORTHERN=20
PARULA, 2 female BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, and a male HOODED WARBLER =
there. The=20
day before he had PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH at that =
small
site.=20
***** Lauderdale County *****
Van McWhorter reports his first BARN SWALLOWS on Wednesday, March 17. He =
also=20
reports a Bald Eagle nest with two eaglets in it at Okatibbee lake.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
That's it for the new information on today's hotline. If you called the =
tape
since Monday, what you'll hear next was all on there...
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%=09
***** Jackson County *****
Monday, March 15. Colinda Green called to report that Charlie Brenke =
saw 4
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the Pascagoula River Marsh today. Colinda =
also
reports 31 GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen at the Seaman Rd. Sewage Lagoon
on Monday.=20
***** Pass Christian, Harrison County *****
Sunday, March 14. Nancy Madden reports that an adult CALIFORNIA GULL =
was seen
by several people, including Judy Toups, in Pass Christian. The bird =
was in
the water just west of the shrimp harbor, and may be the same bird that =
has
been very infrequently along the coast since late December. Also in the =
area
was a male OLDSQUAW. A female OLDSQUAW was also seen on Sunday in Long =
Beach
near the chimney.
***** Madison *****
To the north of us, Ken Hackman reports his first DICKCISSEL of the year =
on
Sunday near the airport in Madison. Recall that Janet Peterson had her =
first
DICKCISSEL of the year in her yard in Bellefontaine on Wednesday, March =
10.
***** Keesler AFB, Harrison County *****
While driving home from the hospital last Saturday morning, Laura =
Peterson=20
counted 9 or 10 SWALLOW-TAILED KITES soaring lazily NE over Keesler AFB.
***** Hancock County *****
Also on Saturday, Judy Toups reports that she too had a SWALLOW-TAILED =
KITE --
this one flying over Cedar Point in Bay St. Louis.
***** Gulfport, Harrison County *****
Judy adds that on Saturday an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER and at least 8 =
MARBLED
GODWITS were found near Moses' Pier in Gulfport.
***** Crowder, Quitman County *****
Mississippi's 8th record of RUFF was found on March 9 by Fred Broerman =
in a
muddy rice-stubble field near the town of Crowder in Quitman County. It =
was
confirmed on the 11th by Jeff Wilson, Gene and Shannon Knight, and =
Marvin
Davis [DIRECTIONS from Marvin Davis' MISSBIRDS post: "Go into Crowder =
from the
east, turning south at T intersection, and and continue S (as the MS rte =
goes
West) as if headed for the NWR/"Crowder Ponds". BUT! Stay with the =
pavement as
it turns west; THEN turn south (left) on the 1st gravel road, and go to =
the
2nd E-W gravel rd. In the SE quadrant from that intersection is the rice =
field
where the bird was seen, mostly at long (scope) range."] Several =
PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS were also seen in those fields--these are our first reports =
for the
year. Has anyone seen them previously in 1999?
At the Crowder Ponds themselves, Marvin Davis passed on word that the =
Knights
saw a couple BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, also our first reports of that species =
for
the year.
FINALLY--another reminder to please let us know about the good birds you
happen to be seeing in the area, particularly any birds mentioned =
currently,
or historically, on this tape.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That's it for the 32nd update of the Mississippi Coast bird hotline. We
generally update the tape late in the evenings whenever new reports come =
in,
and we'll keep viable reports on here until they're just about a week =
old. So
if you have birds to tell us about, including the continued presence of =
any
birds mentioned on this tape, please do so after the tone, and thank you =
for
using our hotline.
Until later, HAVE FUN and GOOD BIRDING.
[COMPILER'S NOTE: Birders with email access can send bird reports or =
comments
directly to me. <SJPeterson@aol.com>. At times when Stacy is out of =
town, send=20
email reports to jerry bird (bird_dj@worldnet.att.net). Similarly, if =
you would=20
like private copies of this transcript emailed to you directly, please =
email me=20
and request so. This includes those who may not wish to receive the =
bulk of RBA
transcripts from BIRDCNTR.]
