Greetings,
This is the Michigan Statewide Weekly Bird Summary for Thursday, March
18, 1999. This report is sponsored by the BERRIEN BIRDING CLUB.
In WAYNE COUNTY -- 3 LONG-EARED OWLS were present as of March 14 at Lake
Erie Metropark. They are easy to see FROM the nature trail that starts
across the parking lot from the Marshland Museum.
In MANISTEE COUNTY -- At Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee a large
flock of diving ducks was seen from the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan
on March 12. Species included 1,200 GREATER SCAUP, 50 REDHEADS, 50
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 45 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2 SURF SCOTERS, 1
OLDSQUAW & 500 COMMON GOLDENEYES. On Manistee Lake, an adult GLAUCOUS
GULL was seen among HERRING & RING-BILLED GULLS.
In ALLEGAN COUNTY -- Eagles are still the story here. On March 12, at
least 7 BALD EAGLES (4adults) and 1 Immature GOLDEN EAGLE were seen at
the Farm Unit of the Allegan State Game Area, along 118th & 120th ave.
Lots of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were also seen. 2 Immature BALD EAGLES were
also seen on the Kalamazoo River upstream from Douglas off of 130th
(Riverside) Dr.
In CHIPPEWA COUNTY -- 3-4 BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported again last
weekend along Basnau Road in the Hulbert Bog. Small numbers of
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were also seen here. 1 SHORT-EARED OWL was seen
flying over Piche Rd. near Brimley. SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen at
three locations...10 on 12 Mile rd west of Shunk Rd, 13 on 11 Mile Rd
west of Riverside and 1 at the intersection of 9 mile and Nicolet.
Winter finches including EVENING GROSBEAK, PINE SISKIN, COMMON REDPOLL,
PINE GROSBEAK & RED & WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are still being reported
from Whitefish Point and other areas in Chippewa Co.
And finally, returning TURKEY VULTURES were reported this week from
BERRIEN, MONROE & OAKLAND COUNTIES.
