In eastern South Dakota, Kristel Bakker observed a single, male WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL at her feeder in Madison (Lake County) on March 13, eating
sunflower
seeds.
In central South Dakota, Pat and Forest Walker saw several WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS on a wetland just off Highway 14 and Highway 83 east, about 10 miles
northeast of Pierre (Hughes County), on March 13. The following day, Doug
Backlund visited the area and did not see the scoters, but observed a ROSS'
GOOSE on the same wetland.
In western South Dakota, Dave Swanson observed a CLARK'S NUTCRACKER at
Sylvan Lake (Custer County) on March 12. Also in western South Dakota,
George
Prisbee of rural Lead near Hannah (Lawrence County) heard his first SAW-WHET
OWL of the season calling on the evening of March 4. George also reported
an
observation of nearly 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Lead on March 7. In
southwestern South Dakota, the Wormstadts had at least 200 GRAY-CROWNED
ROSY FINCHES at their home near Custer (Custer County) on March 10.
Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Brown County will hold their BALD
EAGLE
Day on Sunday, March 28.
