Hello again!! I am behind in these IBR's. Birding trips, wedding showers,
more birding trips, and honey do projects have kept me very busy these past
two weeks or so. Here goes an attempt to bring you up to date on the birding
events of the Coastal Bend in recent weeks.
Mike Marsden led a trip to Goliad County along the San Antonio River recently
that resulted in a number of exciting birds. The Aransas Bird and Nature Club
outting produced a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, DOWNY AND RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and
numerous other good birds. Mike mentioned some of these birds were on the
Victoria side of the river but that's unimportant to this reporter. Other
recent sightings attributed to Mike include a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and BROWN-
CRESTED FLYCATCHER at San Antonio Bayou, an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Salt
Lake in Rockport and a DOWNY WOODPECKER at Shelly Park in Refugio. He also
noted a Krider's form of RED-TAILED HAWK on the Old San Antonio Road. Jim
Hailey also observed a Krider's on the road between Refugio and Higway 35 just
last week.
Bert Frenz spent a couple of days at Choke Canyon recently and added the
following to this report--ANHINGA, BONAPARTE'S GULL, and GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLET. Golden-crowned Kinglets were also found by Mike Marsden at Cayman
House in Rockport and along the trail at Shelly Park in Refugio by Jim Hailey.
There seems to have been an interruption of this species this past winter in
south Texas.
At Six Mile Marsh on North Padre Island Jim Hailey reported a pair of GREATER
SCAUP and a single CINNAMON TEAL on the 9th of March. The very next day he
found a CLAPPER RAIL at Indian Point SP and several singing NORTHERN PARULA at
Shelly Park in Refugio. Earlier on the 6th a BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER caught
his eye on a private ranch near Mathis, Texas. He further reported a pair of
SPOTTED TOWHEES skulking around in Blucher Park early last week.
Paul Palmer reports spotting six to eight MISSISSIPPI KITES overhead in the
Kleberg County area. And Jimmy Jackson noted a COMMON GOLDENEYE on a Bee
County pond recently.
Well the early phase of migration is upon us and future reports should be full
of new and exciting species making their way north to their breeding gounds.
Stay tuned for THE REST OF THE STORY. GOOD-BYE!
