Welcome to an update of the Nebraska Birdline, sponsored by the Audubon
Society of Omaha , for Thursday, March 11th.
In central Nebraska in Kearney County, the COMMON CRANE, was seen again
on the 11th with SANDHILL CRANES north of county road X between county
roads 40 and 41. Take the Gibbon I-80 Exit 285 and go south about 2
miles to the Elm Island Rd. Go east on Elm Island Rd. to the
T-intersection and go south to X Rd. For updates on the Common Crane,
call the Audubon Rowe Sanctuary at 308 468-5282. Please call or e-mail
your sightings of the Common Crane to the Birdline.
In Hall County on the 11th, a ROSS'S GOOSE & a NORTHERN SHRIKE were
spotted on 9th Road.
In Buffalo County on the 9th, 6 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were found on the
University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.
In Gosper County on the 9th at Johnson Lake, 20,000 SNOW GEESE, a GREATER
SCAUP, a GLAUCOUS GULL, a THAYER'S GULL & a CALIFORNIA GULL were seen.
In western Nebraska on the 8th in Keith County at Lake Ogallala, a HORNED
GREBE, 22 GREATER SCAUP, an immature male OLDSQUAW, a fourth-basic LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, 5 THAYER'S GULLS & a GLAUCOUS GULL were found. On
Lake McConaughy on the 8th, a HORNED GREBE & a THAYER'S GULL were seen.
In Sioux County on the 7th, 10 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS & 60 RED CROSSBILLS
were seen in Sowbelly Canyon. Also on the 7th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE & 40
RED CROSSBILLS were found in Monroe Canyon. In southwest Sioux County
on the 7th, 3 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS & 15 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were
seen.
In Kimball County on the 7th, 16 ROSS'S GEESE were seen northwest of
Kimball.
In Scotts Bluff County on the 8th, 2 PRAIRIE FALCONS were seen at Scotts
Bluff National Monument.
In eastern Nebraska in Dixon County on the 10th, a SAVANNAH SPARROW came
to school feeders in Wakefield. Also on the 10th, about 1,000 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS were seen 2 miles north, 3 miles west & 1/2 mile north of
Wakefield.
In Sarpy County on the 10th, 4 HOODED MERGANSERS were seen at Wehrspann
Lake. On the 10th west of Bellevue, a "RED-SHAFTED" NORTHERN FLICKER
came to a feeder in Quail Creek.
In Iowa south of Onawa on the 7th in Monona County, a TRUMPETER SWAN (no
neck collar) was seen at the borrow pit at I-29 Exit 105 at Blencoe.
