The snow has put a lot of birds up by the roads including LAPLAND LONGSPURS,
HORNED LARKS, and some sparrows including SAVANNAH SPARROWS.
A SAW WHET OWL was found at Allerton Park in the Lost Garden. Also an
Immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at the University of Illinois Forestry March 6.
On March 7th a SANDHILL CRANE was at the Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge
and another Sandhill Crane was seen south of Jacksonville March 5th. Also at
Meredosia March 7 were five DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, five PIED-BILLED
GREBES, 200 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 1000 SNOW GEESE, 2000 MALLARDS,
1000 NORTHERN PINTAIL,15 AMERICAN WIGEON, four GADWALL, 15 WOOD DUCKS, 200
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 50 CANVASBACK, 100 LESSER SCAUP, 500 RUDDY DUCKS, two
COMMON MERGANSERS, two HOODED MERGANSERS, three NORTHERN HARRIERS, and six
BALD EAGLES.
A first winter ICELAND GULL and an AMERICAN PIPIT were in Woodford County
last week.
Early EASTERN PHOEBES were seen at the Waverly Lake Dam March 2 and east of
Springfield March 4th.On March 6th a RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE was at the north
end of Lake Springfield and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at Sangchris. A
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was south of Lake Springfield March 7th. An Immature
Goshawk was at Sangchris March 8. A PILEATED WOODPECKER was attending a
feeder northwest of Springfield February 25.
Further south in Illinois a PINE WARBLER was banded at Makanda in Jackson
County and a SURF SCOTER was near Rend Lake Dam March 6th.
Two GREAT EGRETS were at Frank Holten State Park March 6. Also a Surf Scoter
was at Horseshoe Lake in Madison County.
