This is the Heart-of-Texas Rare Bird Alert sponsored by the Rio Brazos
Audubon Society updated as of Wednesday, March 10.

The Heart-of-Texas RBA covers ten counties surrounding College Station
(Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Lee, Leon, Madison, Milam, Robertson,
Waller, Washington).

On March 3 and 4, a probable BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD joined the two
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS that have spent the winter at feeders of Scott
and Gail Cole’s house in Brenham (Washington Co.). Last year the
first Buff-bellied in the Brazos Valley was in Chappell Hill, 9 to 10
miles distant from Brenham.

Marguerite and Paul van Dyke were delighted to find two VERMILION
FLYCATCHERS at Bryan City Cemetery on the 27th. This is only the
second February sighting on record for the area.

exists, but spring migrants had not arrived in numbers until mid-
March. Since Darrell Vollert has been reporting in 1998 from
Washington Co., the number of winter reports has increased
dramatically. This year he has had almost daily reports since
Feb 24. Now we have additional reports from Brazos County: on the
28th in Bryan and on the 9th in Emerald Forest and Lick Creek Park and
regularly on the TAMU campus since the 5th.

CLIFF SWALLOWS and BARN SWALLOWS continue to arrival early. The
Cliff Swallow colony on the Brazos River at US 290 (Waller/Washington
Co. border) increased to 25 by the 6th. Barn Swallows were reported
daily since Feb 27 in Washington and/or Brazos Co.

Darrell Vollert continues to find WINTER WRENS near Chappell Hill
(Washington Co.). An early NORTHERN PARULA was heard singing
vociferously at Lick Creek Park (Brazos Co.) on the 9th by Chris
Merkord.

All interested birders are invited to join in a field trip to the
LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY during Spring Break. The trip is sponsored
by the Rio Brazos Audubon Society and will include a day at the coast
(3/15), a day in the McAllen area (3/17) and a day in the Falcon Lake
area (3/19). For more details see the web site listed below. If
interested in joining us, e-mail Bert Frenz for scheduling details.

The “Checklist and Seasonal Distribution - Birds of the Central Brazos
Valley, Texas” is available. Send $1.00 and a self-addressed stamped
(32 cents) business envelope to Jim Anding, Rio Brazos Audubon Society
