This is the Missouri Bird Alert, a service of the Audubon Society of Missouri for 3/9/99.
Birds highlighted are PINE WARBLER, SANDHILL CRANE, EASTERN PHOEBE,
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, TUNDRA SWAN, PURPLE MARTIN, TREE SWALLOW, INDIGO
BUNTING, BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, returning shorebirds and migrating waterfowl.
SOUTHEAST AREA
- Stoddard County
On 2/26, Bob Lewis birded Otter Slough CA and Mingo NWR. Birds of note were:
Otter Slough CA - BLUE-WINGED TEAL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, COMMON SNIPE,
60,000 SNOW GEESE. (MDC count).
Mingo NWR - WOOD DUCK and EASTERN PHOEBE.
Steve Dilks ventured down south to Mingo NWR and Otter Sough on 3/7 and found the
following birds of note (no designation as to whether the birds were seen at Otter Slough
or Mingo NWR were given):
GREATER-WHITE FRONTED GEESE, SNOW GEESE with 12 ROSS'S GEESE,
15 species of ducks including BLUE-WINGED TEAL, REDHEAD, AMERICAN WIDGEON,
and GREATER SCAUP, 8 species of raptors including BLACK VULTURE,
and RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, EASTERN PHOEBE,
TREE SWALLOW, 8 WINTER WREN, 4 AMERICAN PIPIT, PINE WARBLER, 6
species of sparrows including SAVANNAH, RUSTY AND BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS.
Flora in bloom were : Daffodils, Forsythia, Bluets, Shepherd's purse and Henbit.
- Mississippi County
On 2/26, Bob Lewis also birded Big Oak Tree SP. In addition to some of the birds seen
above he added the following birds of note: YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.
OZARK AREA
- Howell County
On 2/28, Alvin Heselton reported a PURPLE MARTIN in West Plains on the Purple
Martin Conservation Martin website (URL is http://www.purplemartin.org/scout.html )
SOUTHWEST AREA
- Greene County
On 2/28, David Caitlin reported a very early **BROAD-WINGED HAWK located
in downtown Springfield.
Also on 3/1, Greg Swick reported a lone GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE near Palmetto
at the corner of FR 237 and FR 186. Also seen were 3 COMMON SNIPE.
On 3/4, Bruce Beck also reported an early **BROAD-WINGED HAWK over Lake
Springfield. Other birds of note were: 15 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS,
4 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 5 species of ducks including 9 REDHEADS.
Also noted were 70+ AMERICAN ROBINS, a RED-TAILED HAWK displaying nest
building behavior and 1 COOPER'S HAWK.
The Greater Ozark Audubon Society led by Lisa Berger birded the Springfield area
on Sunday, 3/7 and reported the following birds of note: 1 TUNDRA SWAN, 5 species
of ducks including 42 RING-NECKED DUCKS. Also seen were 1 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 13 Mute and 3 Black swans.
In Springfield, Charles West reported a PURPLE MARTIN on 3/8.
- Jasper County
In Webb City on 2/28, Darryl Sparlin reported a PURPLE MARTIN.
- Newton County
On 3/1, Jeff Cantrell observed an EASTERN PHOEBE near Neosho.
- Lawrence County
On 2/23 at the Providence Prairie CA, Steve Juhlin and Jeff Cantrell reported seeing
21 SHORT-EARED OWLS where earlier (2/6/99), Cantrell reported 34 owls.
EAST CENTRAL AREA
- Phelps County
On 2/28, Linda Frederick reported an EASTERN PHOEBE in her back yard in Rolla.
Flora noticed were Rue Anemone, Bluets and Pale Coydalis.
- St. Charles County
A SPOTTED TOWHEE was reported by Kent Lannert on Sat, 2/27 at the Lost Valley
biking/hiking trail, off of Hwy 94, south of August Busch CA.
On 2/27, Mike Brady and Bob Kleiger reported a **LESSER YELLOWLEGS in a fluddle on Powers Road, off of Hwy H. Also reported were large #s of NO. PINTAIL, NO.
SHOVELER and GADWALL.
On 3/2, Charlene Malone reported one BLUE-WINGED TEAL off of Mertz Rd/Hwy H.
Malone also noted 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the "Wood Stork" pool, Riverlands Envir.
Demo Area.
- St. Louis County
On 2/22, Dottie Herwig reported a "pre-alternate molt" male **INDIGO BUNTING at her
feeder during a snow storm.
On 3/2, Mike Brady birded Castlewood SP and found 2 EASTERN PHOEBES. Then on
Sat, 3/6, Brady reported seeing WOOD DUCKS and WINTER WRENS in addition to
E. Phoebe. He also had 3 **SANDHILL CRANES fly over the park on 3/5.
- St. Louis City
On 3/7, Jim Ziebol counted 50 FOX SPARROWS at Tower Grove Park in South St. Louis.
NORTHWEST AREA
- Jackson County
Mike Beck reported on 3/6 , 2 collared TRUMPETER SWANS near the Independence
Airport. They were reported again on 3/9 by David Staehling.
NORTH CENTRAL AREA
- Chariton County
At Swan Lake NWR, Bridget Olsen reported on 3/3 the following birds of note:
10,900 SNOW GEESE, 14 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 14 species of ducks
including 3 BLACK DUCK, 2,802 NO. PINTAIL, 2,905 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 8 BUFFLEHEAD, 37 KILLDEER and 4 BALD EAGLES.
On 3/4 Olsen reported 5 AMERICAN WOODCOCK and a few unidentified "small shorebirds". On 3/5 Steve Kinder and Olsen found 72 COMMON SNIPE in a burned
field on the north side of the east entrance road.
On 3/6 The Grand River Audubon birded Swan Lake NWR and noted the following:
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, AMERICAN
BLACK DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED MERGANSERS and CANVASBACKS,
- Linn County
On 3/6 Grand River Audubon group continued on to the Fountain Grove CA and
noted the following: 14 species of ducks including BLUE-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN
WIDGEON, REDHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, RED-BREASTED and COMMON
MERGANSERS and NO. SHOVELER. Total # of duck species seen for the day was 19.
Also noted were EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, NORTHERN HARRIER and RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS. On the way home from this trip, Jenny Webb reported seeing a
"Krider's" RED-TAILED HAWK just east of Marceline, MO along Hwy 36.
NORTHEAST AREA
- Boone County
On Sat, 2/27, Jean Leonatti birded the Eagle Bluffs CA and reported the following:
11 species of ducks including BLUE-WINGED TEAL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
REDHEAD, RUDDY and LESSER SCAUP. Also noted were: one TREE SWALLOW,
RUSTY BLACKBIRD, a large group of SNOW GEESE and 2 nesting adult BALD
EAGLES. On 3/6, she, Sandy Elbert and Barb Sapp reported 25 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS.
On 2/28, at Eagles Bluffs, Steve Anderson reported seeing a **SORA.
On 3/3, Tom Curtis reported from Eagle Bluffs the following: large #s of COMMON
SNIPE and KILLDEER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS.
Also seen were 2 ROSS'S GEESE in among 300-400 SNOW GEESE. 7 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were also noted. 16 species of ducks including 5 BLUE-
WINGED TEAL, GREATER SCAUP, and COMMON GOLDENEYE . A ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was also seen. On 3/6, 25 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen,
along with 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. Large #s of COMMON SNIPE and
KILLDEER still remain. Several BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS also were noted.
About the same species of ducks remained with an increase to 25 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL. On 3/7 Curtis added a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD to his list of birds with a large
influx of EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
On 3/6, Otto Fajen reported seeing his first PURPLE MARTIN.
