Greetings this is the Rio Grande Valley Audubon Alert for Monday evening
March 8, 1999 sponsored by the Frontera Audubon Society of South Texas
and the Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The BLACK-TAILED GULL* (Larus crassirostris) continues at the
Brownsville Dump; also present is a third winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL (Larus fuscus).

There's probabaly two TROPICAL PARULAS (Parula pitiayumi) at Anzulduas
County Park. They seem to be singing and quit cooperative. The birds are
typically found between the main bathroom and the river boat ramp. Also
Anzulduas look for HERMIT WARBLER (Dendroica occidentalis), these's at
least two there, along with some BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER (Dendroica
nigrescens) and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER (Dendroica virens). The
birds are typically found in the Northeast bath room area along the
levee. Again that's at Anzulduas County Park.

Nearby at Bentsen State Park a NORTHERN BEARDLESS-TYRANNULET
(Camptostoma imberbe) is being seen near Rio Grande Hiking Trail #8 and
also near the camp site 73 and 74.

Further up river look for RED-BILLED PIGEONS (Columba flavirostris) in
Salineno, looking up river towards the island in the middle of the
river. In Chapeno BROWN JAYS (Cyanocorax morio) are being seen at the El
Rio RV Park. Also at Chapeno HOOK-BILLED KITES (Chondrohierax uncinatus)
are being seen across the river in and around the US to Mexico side
somewhere around 8:00 to 8:30 in the morning.

There is also a report of GROOVE-BILLED ANI (Crotophaga sulcirostris)
somewhere near the entrance to Pintail Lake at Santa Ana NWR.

At Rancho Veijo just outside of Brownsville is a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
(Melanerpes erythrocephalus) that contines near 150 Pisaro Street.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS (Zonotrichia albicollis) are being seen couple
of spots. One of them is at Bentsen State Park near Eagle Pond. The
other is at the eastern end of the valley at Laguna Atascosa NWR at the
photo blind near the visitor's center.

At the Sabal Palm Grove there are reports of LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus
dominicus) on the resaca; and BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD (Amazilia
yucatanensis), HOODED ORIOLE (Icterus cucullatus) and ALTAMIRA ORIOLE
(Icterus gularis) at the feeders.

We thank you for calling the Audubon Alert if you have any questions or
would like to leave a message please feel free to do so at the sound of
the tone also ask you leave your name and phone number in case we have
to get back with you and good birding.
